What is real liberty

I have told many people since starting this campaign, that I do not have many answers but I do have lots of questions. This weekend while gathered with some like minded friends the discussion arose about liberty and what it is. We all have our own ideas and opinions about what liberty is but based on this conversion I think that many of us will miss the mark when giving our definitions on this concept of liberty. Most of my life I have been told by people that this is a free country, and it has only been in the past few years that I have begun to disagree with this statement, We are in no way a free country. Now I know that I have already got some of you reading this upset but please read on. For our country to be in a state of liberty many things are going to have to change. The way we look at law and regulation and the way that we interact with people are going to be the areas where we change the most. Now days people want more laws because they think that this is the way to keep things on an even keel. But ask yourself do laws stop crime,if they did we would have the most crime free country in the world. So based on this how much law do we need. Is it possible to live under just basic law like the ten commandants and the golden rule or do we need to go deeper in to the police state and regulate even more that we do now. This is my question to all of you reading this what does liberty mean to you. Please respond as I really want to know if anyone out there wants to make the journey to a place where Big Brother does not exist.

Should anyone not think that the Republican Party has lost its way on the major issues of the day, just look at their latest offering on health care reform. Come on guys, another Bill of Rights? Every time we get into a national debate over an issue one of the parties offers up yet another lame bill of rights. What is wrong with our original Bill of Rights? We could get along just fine if we went with just that. Let the People decide for themselves and then pay for their decisions and all of the Americans that understand what Liberty is will be happy with what they have chosen. The problem with this in the eyes of our two main parties is that this decision will not give them more power over any of our lives. After all, that is what the politics of today is all about; to take power and money from the people and use it the way that the politicians want. How do we change this? I believe that the only way out is to not elect anyone from the two parties in the upcoming elections and go with independent candidates who do not have an agenda of power and greed. I hope that the People of Iowa will have the courage to do just that in the 2010 elections

One of the most important powers that Government has is the power to tax and it seems to me that this is a power about to get out of control. Our nation is in recession and we are going to see states have problems making their budgets work. When this happens all of us know that tax increases are on the way. This will turn out to be a vicious circle, as unemployment rises tax revenues decrease, this causes the state to in turn want to raise taxes As taxes go up many business will have to lay off more people which in turn causes tax revenue to go down. This process raises some questions in my mind. If I lose income in my life I must tighten my belt and figure out how to get by on less, but not the state their solution is as always raise taxes.Something must be done to change this mindset of our state representatives and they must understand that we the people will not tolerate tax increases in hard times. I believe that in order to get this done me must change the way that we run the government budget process and we must make it more difficult for our elected officials to raise taxes.

We begin today

Hello to all who will read this as you can tell by the blog, my name is Rick Marlar and I intend to run for State Senate in the 45 district of Iowa in 2010. I will be running as an Independent candidate because the two parties who control our political process are, in my opinion, the reason for the conditions of our country and our state. The Republicans and the Democrats do not want to solve the problems that exist today because if they did, then we the people would not look to them for the answers. It is a fact that when problems exist , people turn to government. The Founders of our country knew that the answer to the issues of the day must be solved by the people of that day. Today our government wants to put costly patches on problems and pass the cost on to future Americans who might not even be born yet. The main purpose of Government today is control, and that should not be. Government should not be involved in social issues to the point of spending tax dollars. Should I be elected to the Iowa Senate, my main function will be to make government smaller in every way. Less taxes, and less control on peoples lives. Over the next sixteen months, I will be laying out an issue by issue account of what I would like to see changed in our wonderful state.
I will not just be talking in platitudes but I intend to deal with the issues of the day with an in depth manner. Please feel free to join in with the debate because all ideas are welcome here.
